Times Square Suspicious Package Causes Evacuation

Just days after a failed bombing try by Faisal Shahzad, a Times Square suspicious package scare caused the evacuation of Times Square by police. The bomb squad entered the area, and traffic was redirected. The package was found near the Marriott Marquis Hotel. There is no need to get a personal loan to build a bomb shelter yet, as it turned out to be an unattended bag.

Times Square suspicious package innocuous

The NYC Police Department bomb squad inspected the Times Square suspicious package. A small lunch bag was left near the Marriott Marquis near 45th and Broadway. The New York Post reports that the NYPD were tipped off by a street vendor, and they found nothing of concern in it. The alarm was canceled.

Only bottled water in the Times Square suspicious package

The bag had only bottled water in it, as outlined by the Washington Post. Granted, bottled water doesn’t explode, but it could cause the normal person to explode with anger when they realize how much they overpay for it. (Believe it or not, a fair amount of water bottlers really use municipal sources – that’s tap water!) The package actually could possibly be considered dangerous, if you account for the hazards of BPA in bottles and how loose standards on bottle water are in contrast to tap.

It seems some paranoia is justified

This may seem a laughable event, but there has been an atmosphere conducive to paranoia for a while. Many would have had the same reaction to the bag. The intersection where the package was found was the same block where Faisal Shahzad’s ticking Times Square vehicle bomb was discovered. Thankfully he knew nothing about making bombs. Though this seems a bit of a mountain made out of a molehill, the reality is that unfortunately, an ugly and odious air of Fear and Loathing is setting in. One ponders if it will ever leave.
